Filled With the Holy Spirit
Have you ever felt frustrated that you couldnt live the Christian life? What do you do when youre surfing the net and come across a pornographic site? What about when your friends go out Friday night and "forget" to invite you? What do you do when you overhear one of them say they didnt want the "Christian girl" ruining their fun? How do you deal with that sort of rejection? Why does the stuff sound so good on Sunday, but its so hard to do on Monday?
The answer to all of these questions is the key to the Christian life. If you come up short in this one area, your entire Christian life will be frustrating. You may even end up "dissing" your commitment to God.
Get the Facts
It all starts with your understanding of God. The God of the Bible consists of three persons in one: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The one we dont think too much about but who gives us the power is the Holy Spirit. Lets check Him out.
First of all, you need to know that the Holy Spirit is just as much God as the Father and the Son (Acts 5:3,4). Even back in Genesis, God refers to Himself in the plural (Genesis 1:26).
The Holy Spirit
Get Ready to Rumble
You will be attacked from three areas: the world (1 John 2:15-17), the flesh (Galatians 5:17), and the devil (1 Peter 5:8). Now do you see why its so hard to be a Christian? It may be hard, but you need to remember that youre not alone.
No one can do it alone. Jesus told us in John 15:5 that we cant do anything apart from Him. Just like you cant surf the net without a modem connection, you cant do the Christian life without a Holy Spirit connection. The good news is that if youre a Christian, you already have the power you only need to plug in. Just pray and let Him fill you with His power.
Get Filled Up
What would happen to you if you stopped breathing? Obviously, you wouldnt be alive after 2 or 3 minutes. "Spiritual breathing" is just as important to your Christian life. Confessing sin (1 John 1:9) is like exhaling. Claiming the filling of the Holy Spirit by faith (Ephesians 5:18 and 1 John 5:14-15) is how you inhale. Its not just a one-time thing. When you are feeling low spiritually, take a deep breath and give the Holy Spirit control.
Give It Up
Lets say you do blow it. Now what do you do? Dont panic or get depressed. Talk to God and exercise your spiritual breathing. Remember that the whole reason God gave us the Holy Spirit was because we do mess up and we cant do it on our own. So dont "go solo!"
Seek to learn more about the Holy Spirit and make sure you practice spiritual breathing. Youll find yourself better equipped to live the Christian life. Most importantly, the stuff that sounds so good on Sunday will be a 24/7 reality in your life.
