Filled With the Holy Spirit

Have you ever felt frustrated that you couldn’t live the Christian life? What do you do when you’re surfing the net and come across a pornographic site? What about when your friends go out Friday night and "forget" to invite you? What do you do when you overhear one of them say they didn’t want the "Christian girl" ruining their fun? How do you deal with that sort of rejection? Why does the stuff sound so good on Sunday, but it’s so hard to do on Monday?

The answer to all of these questions is the key to the Christian life. If you come up short in this one area, your entire Christian life will be frustrating. You may even end up "dissing" your commitment to God.

Get the Facts

It all starts with your understanding of God. The God of the Bible consists of three persons in one: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The one we don’t think too much about – but who gives us the power – is the Holy Spirit. Let’s check Him out.

First of all, you need to know that the Holy Spirit is just as much God as the Father and the Son (Acts 5:3,4). Even back in Genesis, God refers to Himself in the plural (Genesis 1:26).

The Holy Spirit

What He is not:
  • A ghost of Jesus
  • Some abstract, mystical force
Who He is and what He does:
  • He is God (Acts 5:3-4)
  • He is a person with feelings and thoughts (1 Corinthians 2:11; Ephesians 4:30)
  • He is our only power source for living the Christian life (Acts 1:8)
  • He is our Counselor and Teacher (John 14:25-26)

Get Ready to Rumble

You will be attacked from three areas: the world (1 John 2:15-17), the flesh (Galatians 5:17), and the devil (1 Peter 5:8). Now do you see why it’s so hard to be a Christian? It may be hard, but you need to remember that you’re not alone.

Get Connected

No one can do it alone. Jesus told us in John 15:5 that we can’t do anything apart from Him. Just like you can’t surf the net without a modem connection, you can’t do the Christian life without a Holy Spirit connection. The good news is that if you’re a Christian, you already have the power – you only need to plug in. Just pray and let Him fill you with His power.

Get Filled Up

What would happen to you if you stopped breathing? Obviously, you wouldn’t be alive after 2 or 3 minutes. "Spiritual breathing" is just as important to your Christian life. Confessing sin (1 John 1:9) is like exhaling. Claiming the filling of the Holy Spirit by faith (Ephesians 5:18 and 1 John 5:14-15) is how you inhale. It’s not just a one-time thing. When you are feeling low spiritually, take a deep breath and give the Holy Spirit control.

Give It Up

Let’s say you do blow it. Now what do you do? Don’t panic or get depressed. Talk to God and exercise your spiritual breathing. Remember that the whole reason God gave us the Holy Spirit was because we do mess up and we can’t do it on our own. So don’t "go solo!"

Seek to learn more about the Holy Spirit and make sure you practice spiritual breathing. You’ll find yourself better equipped to live the Christian life. Most importantly, the stuff that sounds so good on Sunday will be a 24/7 reality in your life.
