A Clean Heart for a Fresh Start

Those who know Christ personally may still stumble and make mistakes in their Christian life. When we sin, what should we do?

"But if we confess our sins to God, He can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away." – 1 John 1:9

What is Confession?

Confession basically means "to agree with God," to say the same thing as God. When I confess my sin, it means two things:

  1. First, I call sin wrong and do not gloss over it or blame it on some other person or circumstance; I take responsibility for it and admit my error.

  2. Second, I agree with God that Christ died for that sin and that it was forgiven at the cross. I accept by faith that fact for myself for that particular sin. Confession involves exercising faith in the promises of God.

Confession also involves repentance, which means to take action and turn from our sin and wrong attitudes or actions, and humbly trust in God’s power over temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13).

When you begin your relationship with God through Jesus Christ, you begin a lifelong and eternal friendship. Like any friendship, honesty is very important. That is why confession is so vital. It says to God that you value your relationship, and you deeply respect Him for who He is – the One who created you and gave His life to save you. Practice being honest with God every day and agreeing with Him when you have made a mistake.
